Our teachers are at the heart of learning at Van Allen. They help students build skills, gain confidence and try new things. Teachers keep learning too, through training, teamwork and feedback.
Teamwork That Helps Students Grow
Teachers work together during staff training days and PLC minimum days. PLC stands for Professional Learning Community. They also have monthly time to plan while substitute teachers cover their classes.
Teams agree on key learning goals, review student work and test results, share teaching ideas and plan lessons. At least one teacher from each grade level has had in-depth PLC training.
Four questions guide their work:
1. What do we want students to learn?
2. How will we know they have learned it?
3. How will we help students who need more support?
4. How will we challenge students who are ready for more?
Teachers Keep Learning, Too!
The principal gives teachers feedback on clear lesson goals, checks for learning and tasks that build deeper thinking. Teachers use sentence starters to help students share ideas in full sentences.
New teachers receive a week of GLAD training from certified trainers. GLAD helps teachers build students’ language skills as they learn. All teachers can take updated training each year.
Staff also share ideas and teaching tools at meetings twice a month.
Making Math Come Alive
Teachers lead classroom visits called Instructional Rounds. They gather information about lessons and share what they learn with the staff.
The focus is number sense: helping students understand numbers and how they work together. Students learn through Number Talks, group discussions, math games and hands-on tools. Lessons also include key math words and tasks that help students explain their thinking.

Grandes maestros.

Nuestros maestros son una parte clave del aprendizaje en Van Allen. Ayudan a los alumnos a ganar destrezas y confianza. Los animan a probar cosas nuevas. Los maestros también aprenden con cursos, trabajo en equipo y consejos para mejorar.
Trabajar juntos para ayudar a los alumnos
Los maestros trabajan juntos en los días de formación y los días cortos de PLC. PLC significa Comunidad Profesional de Aprendizaje. También tienen tiempo cada mes para planear mientras maestros suplentes atienden sus clases.
Los equipos fijan metas de aprendizaje. Revisan trabajos y resultados de pruebas. Comparten ideas y planean lecciones. Al menos un maestro de cada grado ha recibido formación a fondo en PLC.
Cuatro preguntas guían su trabajo:
1. ¿Qué queremos que aprendan los alumnos?
2. ¿Cómo sabremos que lo han aprendido?
3. ¿Cómo ayudaremos a quienes necesitan más apoyo?
4. ¿Qué retos daremos a quienes están listos para más?
¡Los maestros también aprenden!
El director da consejos a los maestros sobre las metas de las lecciones. También revisa cómo comprueban lo aprendido y cómo ayudan a pensar más a fondo. Los maestros usan inicios de frases para que los alumnos compartan ideas en oraciones completas.
Los maestros nuevos reciben una semana de formación en GLAD con instructores certificados. GLAD ayuda a desarrollar el lenguaje mientras los alumnos aprenden. Todos los maestros pueden actualizar su formación cada año.
El personal también comparte ideas y herramientas de enseñanza en reuniones dos veces al mes.
Dar vida a las matemáticas
Los maestros dirigen visitas a los salones llamadas Rondas de Enseñanza. Recogen datos de las lecciones y comparten lo que aprenden con el personal.
La meta es que los alumnos entiendan los números y cómo se relacionan. Aprenden con charlas sobre números, conversaciones en grupo, juegos y materiales que pueden tocar. Las lecciones incluyen palabras clave de matemáticas y tareas para explicar cómo piensan.
